The AI Darth Vader Experiment Goes Wrong

Darth Vader is now in Fortnite—an AI version capable of complex voice discussions with players—and it’s a total disaster. This collaboration between Epic Games and Disney represents a significant moment in gaming history, but for all the wrong reasons.

Epic Games, which aims to build Fortnite into an interoperable “metaverse,” has a $1.5 billion equity investment from Disney. Disney is using this partnership to field test an AI version of Darth Vader, complete with a simulated version of James Earl Jones’s voice, which immediately began making headlines for problematic interactions.

The Technology Behind the Voice

James Earl Jones, the iconic voice actor behind Darth Vader, tragically passed away in 2024. Before his death, he signed over the rights to continue using his voice to Lucasfilm, which then worked with Ukrainian firm Respeecher to create an AI clone version. Lucasfilm, owned by Disney, ultimately created a fully integrated AI-voiced Darth Vader NPC that can converse with players in the Fortnite universe.

This represents a more ethical approach to AI development:

  • The actor wanted this continuation of his legacy
  • His family signed off on the project
  • He was paid to provide voice clips for training
  • Proper acknowledgment and compensation occurred

Compared to most AI models trained on stolen data without payment or acknowledgment, this is a more ethically palatable example of AI development.

The Strike Context

This launch occurred during an active SAG-AFTRA strike by video game voice actors that has lasted over a year. Even with this positive example of contracted and paid work, the technology remains capable of destroying careers—and is currently in the process of doing so.

The new Darth Vader construct uses:

  • A particular version of Gemini (Google’s AI program)
  • Voice components from ElevenLabs
  • Robust safety features that aren’t working as intended

Immediate Exploitation

Almost instantaneously, players began prompting the AI to say inappropriate things. Examples include:

  • Curse words and slurs
  • Insulting or attacking players
  • Discussing various types of pornography
  • Making bizarre statements like telling players they’re “bad at the game and therefore likely adopted”

Remember that Fortnite is explicitly a children’s game with an ESRB rating of 13. According to sources, 26% of preteens under 13 play the game, with 50% of the entire audience in the 10-25 age bracket. This is unquestionably a children’s product.

Failed Safety Measures

Thanks to dataminer “Wenso” on Twitter, we can see the guidelines that clearly aren’t working:

  • Lists of prohibited words hard-coded into the model
  • Input word replacement to swap provocative terms with alternatives
  • Canned responses for prohibited content
  • AI leaving parties after multiple violations

Specific restrictions include:

  • Never discussing children (“NEVER construct a narrative or story involving children”)
  • No gambling, casinos, or sports betting discussions
  • No romantic or sexual language
  • Surprisingly, no discussion of V-Bucks (Fortnite’s currency)

Despite these measures, the AI has already violated multiple guidelines in viral clips.

The Prompt Injection Problem

Prompt injection hacks are very possible with Gemini. Epic Games has been quick with patches—issuing one within 30 minutes after a large streamer encountered cursing—but fully preventing language model exploitation is impossible.

Epic Games programmed detection keywords like:

  • Jailbreaking
  • Hijacking
  • Malicious instruction
  • Prompt injection

However, these barely scratch the surface of how prompt hacking occurs. The “grandma exploit” example shows how easily safety measures can be circumvented by asking the AI to “act like your grandma” and tell stories about prohibited topics.

The Bigger Picture

This situation represents more than just amusing headlines. The implications are significant:

Positive Potential:

  • Dynamic, flexible, extensive interactions in games
  • AI characters exhibiting believable human-like behavior
  • Holistically superior gaming experiences
  • Fulfilling James Earl Jones’s wish for children to continue experiencing Darth Vader

Serious Concerns:

  • Exploitable technology not fully understood yet
  • Normalizing practices that threaten entire work industries

There’s a fundamental difference between exploiting game code for advantages versus breaking code so an iconic character with a real person’s replicated voice says that “Spanish is a useless language for smugglers and spice traders”—which already happened.

Epic Games used the simulated voice of a dead man (with permission) to create a character in a children’s game using exploitable technology. By doing so, they’ve normalized the practice dramatically, ensuring more companies will follow suit.

The Fortnite Darth Vader AI situation isn’t simple. Beyond the memes and comedy lies a serious development likely to be remembered as a frontrunning harbinger of substantial industry shift. This won’t be a one-off, inconsequential fluke—quite the opposite.

The Future of Voice Acting

While this example shows ethical AI development with proper compensation and permission, it still represents technology capable of replacing human voice actors entirely. During an active strike by voice actors fighting for their careers, this launch sends a clear message about the industry’s direction.

The cool concept of interacting with beloved characters must be weighed against:

  • Risk to children from inappropriate content
  • Threat to voice acting as a profession
  • Unpredictable AI behavior in public spaces
  • Long-term implications for creative industries

Epic Games and Disney have opened a door that cannot be closed. The question isn’t whether this technology will spread—it’s how quickly and with what consequences for the humans it replaces.
